Just found out about Jacks passing. So sad. But what a wonderful legacy he left behind - he has been my favourite author for 30 years and always will be.

Hi Jack, I read your first book over 35 years ago and since then I read them all. Your books have been an irreplaceable company in my good times and a great comfort in the bad times. After reading hundreds of books, the only writer I read over and over is the Master... Jack Vance. I just keep going back to him. Nobody else has had this effect. Incredible gift, I thank God for the gift that was Vance. Forever will the world be indebted to his widening of the envelope of our imagination.

As a young teenager living at the coast in Belgium, I devoured all Jack Vance books that were translated in Dutch in the library, before turning to buying the English originals later on. These books have brought me so much delight not in the least by creating a wonderful universe to which one could escape for so many hours. I always felt sad when turning the last page. Now, Jack Vance has turned his last page, and this has struck a sad chord in all of us. However, it suffises to walk to our book shelf, pick up one of his books or collected stories, and immerse oneself again, as if one meets a good friend or acquaintance again, after some time has passed, to hear all again about the stories that he once told us on previous passages. My sincere condolences to Jack Vance's family. I salute his tremendous writing talent and am genuinly grateful to have had(and still have)the privilige and pleasure of getting inside his unpar alleled universes.

Jack, your story 'The Moon Moth' transported me, more than anything I've ever read , to a fantastic, believable world, and delighted me in a way that no author (and I've read a lot !) has ever managed to do.Pearls of genius in every sentence, the craftmanship of this and all your stories gave a deeper meaning to the definition and possibilities of Imagination. .

I'm french and therefore lacked the subtleties of Jack Vance's stories, lost in translation. I am now reading or re-reading his work in english and know he will guide me for the rest of my life, both through my thirst for new knowledge in a language he clearly mastered and my hunger for wonderful stories ! Jack Vance can't die anymore as he's now a part of us all, wherever we are !

I first read Jack Vance in my teens, at the time only 4-5 of his books were availible in swedish, and rediscovered him ten years later. I then realized, to my utter astonshisment, that I had unknowingly tried to copy his style in all my writitng up to that point. Since then I've hunted down everything I can find by him. His wild, imaginative stories has brought so much joy to my life. Thank you for everything.

Jack Vance's worlds have been a part of me since I can remember. Magnus Ridolf and the worlds he travelled have haunted me since I was a child. To this day I can feel his gritty strangeness. He was a very special writer. Thank you, Mr. Vance.

Like many, for me it started with a Cugel story, which led to The Dying Earth, then the Demon Princes and so on for 30 years of reading pleasure. Like the greatest artists, Jack got better with age and his creativity never waned - indeed it seemed that each new he created was deeper and more intricate than the last. He will be missed by friends and family, but for all of avid readers he will live on in our constant re-reading of his works. Like comfort food, there is nothing like curling up with a classic Vance work to take your mind to a distant planet, another eon, a place of adventure, romance and mystery. Truly an original, recognize Jack's passing by remembering the first time you discovered his genius - and go re-read that book!

Ave atque vale to a truly original creator of worlds, species, civilisations and individuals of such complexity and variety that the cinema industry could be kept busy making epics for decades. I would dearly love to see such stories such as Durdane or Tschai rendered onto the screen by truly competent exponents of the art. Ever since I read The Dying Earth in the 1970s, I scoured every bookshop I came across in the hope of finding any Jack Vance novel or collection of short stories I had yet to experience. For one experiences his works rather than merely reading them.

I just now found out Mr. Vance passed away. My deepest thoughts goo out to the family. I have read almost every book Mr. Vance wrote. His prose is stylistic, and engrossing, as are every one of his novels. Back in 1997, I took a shot at writing. I e-mailed Mr. Vance's website to tell him how much reading his incredible books meant to me, and (selfishly) to ask for tips. I was fortunate enough to get a reponse from his son, who was very kind, and let me know his father was a bit under the weather. That simple response meant worlds to me. Jack (if I may so bold to address you by your first name), I mourn your passing. But, I take some solace that to this day, I read, and re-read your works, and still enjoy every single word. You are one of the greatest sci-fi authors to put pen to paper. Bless you, and you family.

I discovered Jack Vance's books as a young man and fell in love with his prose style. In my opinion he should be rated as one of the greats of Science Fiction and Fantasy. Its been so long since I have read his work but my all time favorite of his was "The Dragon Masters".

I've read thousands of books by many hundreds of authors over a thoroughly discreditable swath of English letters and Jack Vance is the author I most often return to, over and over again. For his vast understanding of the human mind and spirit, his daunting erudition, his haunting descriptions, his amazing inventiveness and enormous understated humor- a nonpareil. I reread for the dozenth time just to wallow in the beauty of his language. I suppose what really keeps me coming back to the same pages over and over again is I always find something new about myself in them. He richly deserves these many heartfelt expressions although I get the impression that he may have been a little puzzled by them. I don't think he placed the same sort of idealization that we do on his vast talents. In many ways, just a regular guy, in others, a titan. I am grateful we have his superlative body of work for solace in a world less fantastic for his passing.

I discovered Jack Vance's literate fantasy when I was a young man. Quite by chance I picked up "Eyes of the Overworld" at a charity shop and began to read. From the firs page I was entranced and bought the book. By the last page I was determine to seek out everything I could by the author. He sealed my admiration and addiction with "Lyonesse" -a book of such lyricism and precision with language, that reading itself becomes half the pleasure. The story is as beautiful as the writing. For me, there is no finer writer of fantasy and never will be. Jack Vance is a scholar of humanism (even in strange new worlds), an uncanny philosopher, a wise teacher, a worldly companion, a mercurial jester, and a master of wordcraft. He may have been underrated in his lifetime, but to those, like me, who his work has inspired; he is legend. May a new and splendid adventure await your soul in the Beyond. RS

Just very recently i discovered jack vance's death. in my opinion he was one of the greatest literary figures of any time. i have read him since very early 70'es and i just love his works.both his science fiction and his fantasy books have an unmistakable characteristic that can only be jack vance.i still enjoy reading his writings and some i have read so manytimes yet still they maintain their freshness and beauty.jack vance has created a foreverness within me of his wonderful characters and his magic. there truely can never be a farewell to someone like jack vance. he lives through his incredible creativity.

He has transformed his Jazz into Literature, with the voices of his characters sometimes playing tunes and duetts which can compare to the best that has ever been written. Lyonesse, aaah. There are no fantasy works to equal it, none at all. And that is only three of his magnificent books. Though Jack Vance is no more, his books are, and I go back to them when the bleak winters of Norway make me stay indoors.

I cannot describe the depth of my sadness, my endless thanks to a genius of modern literature. He was old, I knew that, but the primitive parts of my brain still believed he would live forever, and produce magnificent work ever anon. The Last Castle is destroyed.

Having thought about whether to make a contribution amidst so many wonderful thoughts, I am adding my piece. Whilst many have rightly waxed lyrical about the Dying Earth, Tschai, and the wonderful Demon Princes, these to me always felt like the overture to the masterpieces. I mean of course Lyonesse and Cadwal. The sheer joyous effrontery of writing possibly the best science fiction trilogy of all time and one very much in keeping with our need to conserve and save our own beautiful planet, was then matched by the malign intricacy and magic of Tolkien's Faerie in Lyonesse. Somewhat taciturn and unbending and yet believable heroes such as Glawen Clattuc and Aillas continue to bemuse me with their sardonic altruism and competence, and they always will. Go with God, Mr. Vance, I will see you on Nightlamp.

Just found out that Mr. Vance has passed away. This world has ever produced those who take and those who give, what Jack Vance gave to his readers was a pass out of this world and out of this time. Very few writers have done that for me. A great mind is gone but his books, his opus, will live ever on. And, yes, thank you so very much.

You are by far, my favorite all-time writer. Why ? I DONT REALLY KNOW except that you are the only writer i can read OVER AND OVER again : your novels (Demon Princes about 10 times, Wyst, Emphyrio, etc ...) and short stories and novelettes (Brains of the Earth, Moon Moth, etc ...), each and evey time with the same pleasure : a mix of wonder, humor, suspense, cleverness and often melancholy. I just turned 50, and 30 years after discovering Tschai, I don't think I have ever gone 2 months without feeling the NEED, the URGE to pick up one of your books and savor it like a special treat. And when i had the chance to run into a JV fan, we would become instant buddy, comparing, sharing and pondering why we were so hooked. Anyway, I know Kirth, Adam, Gatzel, Ghyl and so many others will always stay with me (especially Jantiff who i feel very close to). THANK YOU so much, sir, and may you RIP. Eric Vuillemey
