Jack Vance passed away at home on the evening of Sunday May 26, 2013, ending a long, rich and productive life. Recognized most widely as an author, family and friends also knew a generous, large-hearted, rugged, genial, hard-working, optimistic and unpretentious individual whose curiosity, sense of wonder and sheer love of life were an inspiration in themselves. Author, friend, father and grandfather – there will never be another like Jack Vance.

~ ☆ Raise a Toast to Jack Vance ☆ ~

At the last moments of the universe, with eternal darkness converging from all sides, surely someone will arise and cry out: ‘Hold back the end for a final moment, while I pay tribute to the gallant brewmasters who have provided us a pathway of golden glory down the fading corridors of time!’ And then, is it not possible that a bright gap will appear in the dark, through which the brewmasters are allowed to proceed, to build a finer universe?

It is with tears in my eyes that I've just learnt that Jack Vance is gone. With him it's a part of my youth that is gone, the better part that saw me walking the Dying Earth alongside Cugel, running after the Demon Princes through the Oikumene, or trying to escape the evil plans of Casmir and Tamurello... Thank you for everything, Jack, and now I'm waiting for my kids to be old enough to enter your worlds too...

I learned of Jack's books back when I was a young teenager and the local library was my hall of wonders in which I'd spend too many afternoons. Jack opened my eyes to a universe so tangible, so detailed and believable that I could imagine it would all become a reality one day. I wish you'd been able to live to see that colourful future, so that you could tell the world:"See, exactly as I thought..." I'll raise a cold one in your memory, master Vance.

Hi, I'm terribly sad to hear about the Death of Jack Vance. He was truly my best loved author of Fantasy and Science Fiction. No one ever got near to those richly baroque descriptions of remote civilizations. I started being a fan as a boy but never stopped as an adult (as with so many others). Instead everytime I re-read his books I would find something new to discover. I will miss him. Thanks for all! Werner

I have only just found out about Jack's passing, and am deeply saddened at the loss of this unique and remarkable voice. On the bookshelf above my bed are a fifteen or so books, my favourites, books that I read and read again, and almost all of them are Jack's. If there exists any form of existence after this life, it is my fervent hope that, "...with foam at the bow and a gurgle to the wake...", Jack is surging forward into it...

For more than 40 years Jack has been part of my life. That is: my bookshelf is stacked with all (well, almost all) his books both in the original language and in the Dutch language. Reading Jack's books not only gave me pleasure in reading them, but actually improved my own English and Dutch speaking and writing by his use of words and sentences. Once or twice per year I check about Jack on the internet. Only to find out that he passed away several months ago. What a loss. Jack, thank you so much for leaving us so many exciting and beautiful books and short stories.

Over 30 years ago I discovered in a local (Dutch) library a book that took me to the Oikumene and Beyond and I was hooked. Over the years I built up quite a collection of Jack Vance's work, eagerly waiting for his latest book or one I'd not yet read. Or simply re-reading the books I had for the sheer joy they gave me. That collection I left behind when I moved to the UK 5 years ago where I discovered I could start collecting again. Thank you for sharing the past and the future, worlds far away and near and the hours of pleasure I (and many thousands of others) get when we pick up a book written by Jack Vance.

I discovered the works of Jack Vance in a tattered grocery bag of paperbacks and digest SF magazines brought to our house by a friend of my parents.it ..was June of 1971, school was out for the year, I was 14, and in my hands i held the Ace paperback of "The Dirdir" and the first installment of the F&SF serialization of "The Faceless Man". (I didn't find the second installment till 6 months later, from a used bookstore i found in an ad in the back pages of F&SF.) My life changed that day...and even though i never met Jack Vance, his sensibility definitely affected my own artistic efforts....and I've read at least a few pages of his work every day. I now own the 6th leather bound copy of the 2nd edition of the Vance Integral Edition....and I read from it regularly, start to finish. Thank you Mr. Vance for opening my eyes to a very new way of looking at the world.... the flavors of alien food, the styles of alien dress, the exquisite manners of alien culture, and the wonderful colors of alien sunrises and sunsets.

My dad would read me Jack Vance novels when I was younger, giving me a love of sci fi that lasts even today. I have since read many sci fi novels by Vance's contemporaries, and by more modern authors, but Jack Vance's writing remains my absolute favorite. My dad and I don't have much in common, but his work has always been a place where we can meet. Thank you Jack Vance, your writing will always remain in my heart!

The last of the giants of science fiction and fantasy is gone! Will we ever see his like again? In imagination Jack Vance had few peers in his field, and no others coupled that imagination with both such brilliant, polished prose and subtle wit. Fortunately his masterpieces - the Dying Earth series, The Last Castle, Dragonmasters and so many other wonderful stories - live on, and we can still relish the escapades of that immortal rogue, Cugel the Clever. Farewell, Jack, and thank you for many years of reading pleasure!

Here's my personal mystery concerning Jack Vance. I've never entirely understood the influence his stories have on me. When I read them, I feel stunned by the wonder of how every element is made manifest. His plot lines seem to soar around the narratives of real life; mocking our foolishness one minute, then honoring our courage the next. His descriptions of alien places and beings--and the unpredictable results of human presence in those settings--paint vivid images in my mind. That's why I've never been very impressed with the covers created for his books, even the ones his fans hail as worthy of Jack's writing. Not one comes close to what Jack's prose triggers in my mind's eye. (Unfortunately I can't draw or paint.) No, I'm not another science fiction fanatic. I enjoy the best authors: Ray Bradbury, Philip K. Dick, Ursula K. Leguin, etc. I also enjoy mainstream writers: William Faulkner, E.L. Doctorow, Haruki Murakami, John Updike, etc. But Jack seems to me to be almost a genre unto himself, with a few consistent general features in his style that result in the "sci-fi" rubber stamp being placed on his books. Heck, reading isn't even my greatest passion; music is. But the effects of the finest music I've heard usually fades in a couple of hours. A Jack Vance story stays with me for months; sometime years. Its features haunt me. Each story is almost like a person who comes to my house and then just stands there waiting for me to answer questions. Puzzling questions, like: "Why I am I so important to you?" "Why have I changed the way you look at life?" "How could one man's fiction have this effect on you?" Some folks talk about spirit guides who help a person through crucial passages in life. If Jack Vance's creative voice is my spirit guide, it's done little to help me understand where I'm supposed to be going. But, maybe I don't need to "explain" the mystery. Maybe explaining every mystery is an obsession for scientists; a cultural trait peculiar to Western culture. Maybe unexplained mysteries keep us humble, curious, amazed, dazzled and engaged in the now. Sorry, Jack. Sorry that I couldn't write a more fitting tribute for a good man who has done so much for me. And without ever getting to know me. Our intersection was thousands of quirky ink patterns printed on cheap paper; alphabet patterns I was only able to translate after years of schooling. Somehow, Jack Vance found a way to transmit his benevolent sorcery through those little shapes.

Alas , as a french reader I do not have the English words who would allow me to say all the love that I carry to Jack Vance. It was a poet, a humorist and a fabulous storyteller whose characters succeed more by the intelligence than the pure force.I thank Jack Vance for all these hours of happiness that it gave me. Cugel, Kirth Gersen and so much of other... It will not be forgotten.

I must have been 11 when I found a curious little book called "the Pnume" in my father's library. I read it - in Dutch- and was utterly bewildered by the strangeness, the boundless imagination, the wry wit, the richness and flavour of even the simplest conversations. I didn't read the entire Tschai omnibus until years later at university…but I and my circle of friends became avid Jack Vance fans. We must have sought out and read every novel or short story we could get our hands on. I just recently introduced a young friend to The Demon Princes and she too is now drawn into this wonderful myriad of universes. Somehow, Mr Vance, I thought you would survive us all. Thank you for the stories; I will enjoy them, time and time again, to my dying day. My warm sympathies to your family and friends.

The first book i read by Jack Vance, was 'The Eyes of the Overworld' which introduced me to a certain Cugel, who turned out to be a character i would never forget. The book was a fantastic read and amused me so much i had to read it again the next day. Being on holiday in Greece at the time, i could not wait to get back to the Uk to begin my search for other books by Jack Vance. I was totally hooked and grew to love Jack's writing style. The characters, wit, sheer farce, poignancy, imagination and adventure throughout his writing hit a deep chord within me and i could not get enough of it. Since then, i have read and reread Jack's books until some have fallen apart but lucky for me . i always bought Jack's books in pairs when i could, to allow for that distinct possibility. Jack Vance's worlds and characters will remain with me forever and with a tear in my eye, i salute, applaud and celebrate one of the best writers on planet Earth.
