After Giants like Steinbeck Twain Silverberg Dickens I wandered into a bookstore waiting for a bus. 14 years old. I had just enough time to find Big Planet/Slaves of the Klau Ace double. Of course I bought it. From that point on I went from junior varsity to Jack Vance. Deep fun invigorating water. Every Vance story I could lay my Cugel-like hands on I did And always will. I can say this about no other author. One thing though, My daughter read the elder isles trilogy in her pubescent years. Anytime, as a single Father I found myself nagging her, she would address me as Lady Desdea. We both love you Jack Vance. Your remarkable stories will remain on the bookshelf and in my mind until I embark upon a last adventure on the Fantamic Flitterwing.

An extraordinary talent. The original Ayg 62 Dragonmasters story as illustrated was a magnificent short tale that I cherish even now- I met the Artist for the Galaxy edition. Jack Vance gave strength credible content and excellence of craft to all of the great work he created. A sorrow to see him past this life- an inspiring life-

Didn;t know you died this year Jack until now. To me in Ireland and my friends in Holland you were the greatest of them all, you were truly the master! Just because I want to read your books again in the original language I found out you passed away to another world, may it be one of your own choice!

J'avais douze ans lorsque j'entendis parler d'un petit roman "un monde d'azur" (the blue world). C'était à la télévision, une émission, appelée " temps X", consacrée à la science- fiction. Ce petit roman, trente ans plus tard, je l'ai toujours dans ma bibliothèque, il a été l'instigateur de ma passion pour la lecture, que de livres et d'auteurs parcourus au cours de ces années! Ce soir en lisant la première page des Chroniques de Durdane j'ai eût envie faire quelques recherches sur leur auteur et c'est avec tristesse que j'apprends sa disparition. I have started my journey into Jack Vance's worlds at the age of 14 and voraciously read his books over the next 20 years. Jack, you are the genius in the lamp and your magic is still operating on me ( i am 49 ). Many gods bless you.

I too only found out today of Vance's passing, and it has been a blow. Vance's work has been such an influence on me - how I think of language, and how I think of the fantastic and the familiar alike. The world is poorer for his absence from it.

I just found out today, December 13, 2013 that The Master passed away. I received the "Duivels Prinsen" series (Demon Princes), in Dutch, for my high school graduation in 1987. Been a fan ever since have been collecting all of his work in Dutch and English. I love the characters, the detail in which he describes the environment the story takes place and in particular the odd little facts of the worlds which he adds to his stories. Unbelievable he is gone.

Jack Vance provided me more than 45 years of delight. I've read and re-read all his SF and Fantansy works countless times. Each reading reveals another nuance that I somehow overlooked before. His soaring intellect, wit, and wry social commentary never fail to enlighten (and often amuse) the reader. He was a master without peer of language, ideas, and imagery. Jack, you never knew me, but I knew you well. May you sail the aeons with fair winds astern. Farewell, Old Friend, farewell!

Great writing and imagination, old son. Always more than liked your work. So much so that all of the paperbacks I've collected are literally falling to bit - just like me. you taught me how to start writing, in a futile attempt to emulate your style. But nobody could do that. Jack Vance's writing captivated me. In particular I absolutely love the Planet of Adventure series of 4 books (now in omnibus form). The Dirdir, The Pnume etc.... just wonderful imagination and description coupled with some humour. And then there's Cugel and many many more. God Bless, Jack, and rest in peace.

I discovered my first Jack Vance novels (Daw paperback editions of Wyst and Trullion) in a little hole-in-the-wall bookshop in India. I was instantly hooked, and spent the next 20-odd years hunting down Vance novels. Thirty-something years later I still have those original two paperbacks, and have read, over and over, every single one of his novels that I own. Each time I read them, they open up vistas in my mind that no other author can achieve, nor can they match the sheer elegance of the writing. Jack Vance, you were simply the greatest. Rest in peace, Great Soul.

I first heard of Jack's death on June 14th. I immediately started rereading everything he ever wrote. Some 60 or so novels and some 90 or so short stories later, I have finished. There wasn't a boring page in the lot. And there were weeks at a time that were just sheer bliss. "All of the nights we'd harmonize till dawn I never laughed so long so long so long"

In all the billions of years of future that await us there will never be another Jack Vance. Thanks for taking me on so many memorable travels. You've brightened my childhood. I wish you could have come with us..

I've read books by writers who are considered to be master novelists. I can't think of any writer who has given me more pleasure than Jack Vance. His books reward continued reading. Every few years I take out my Vance collection and read the whole thing. When I'm done I feel terribly sad. There are no more Jack Vance books to read! How awful! No more masterpieces like Lyonesse, no more chilling epics like the Planet Of Adventure (Tschai, etc). Mo more Anome, no Kerth Gerson. Jack Vance was a master anthropologist, an observer of human cultures, habits and social organizations. Every book contained an inn or two, run by surly but clever inn keepers. There were bands of musicians, led by trickster bandleaders whose lanky strides measured the beats of exotic instruments and time signatures. Jack Vance's recurring theme was a hearty laugh at ourselves, as if to say, "How odd we are; how odd we will be when we have spread across the universe. We will always be eccentric, absurd, arbitrary, inventive, tenacious and we will always survive in one form or another." Thank you, Jack Vance, for a life time of reading pleasure.

I'm an Iranian-American fan of Jack Vance. He was an imaginative, baroque, and witty author. I believe he was underappreciated. Nevertheless, Mr. Vance, I salute you for your creativity and hours of enjoyment that you bestowed on us, your fans. IFA

For every book I have read there were none that I could read again, and again, apart from the works of Jack Vance. I had never met Jack in person, but it seems I almost know him from his books; an erudite, articulate and humourous man with a penchant for adventure, beauty and mystery. This world has lost a remarkable individual in Jack.

Jack has been one of my favourite authors for more than twenty years. My condolences to the friends and family of this amazingly talented man.

When browsing through my father's book collection I found The Demon Princes. I was around 12 years old and this is the book that made me a Sci-Fi/Fantasy junky. Since then I've read more books from Jack Vance but The Demon Princes remains my favorite. When I think about The Face and it's humorous ending, I still feel the need to laugh out loud. Rest in peace, my good man. Rest in peace.

A toast to Jack Vance, whose writing has been a major part of my life for the last 60 years. I have read Lyonesse over 10 times now, and am looking forward to another re-reading when enough years pass so I will no longer have every line memorized. His prose at its best was equal to the very best! My condolences to his family, but also my congratulations for having lived with this master writer who was evidently as enjoyable a companion as he was a writer.

I first discovered your books in the local library in my early teens. Many happy hours were spent fighting across Tschai or cruising the Gaean Reach in search of adventure. Thank you for so much enjoyment.

In my mid teens I first came across the name of Jack Vance in "Astounding" ( The Miracle Workers of 1958 ) .... and I still have that original magazine ! I can recall my thrill at acquiring my first copies of The Dragon Masters , of The Star King , of City of the Chasch . Much later , I recall my son's deep concerns that Jack appeared to have both the Araminta and Lyonesse series on the go simultaneously , and might die before either trilogy was completed . To his great relief , and mine , both WERE completed, to join all his other works on my bookshelves. Thank you Jack for your magnificent use of English , and for teaching me the use of words like "dree" and "pantologist" . Sad to know that there'll now be no more additions to the works on my Vance shelf ... books I continue to reread regularly even today for the literary style that I enjoy so much, despite the passage of over 50 years . Thank you , Jack , for all those decades of unalloyed pleasure you brought to me .

A massive thank you to Jack Vance for lighting the fire of imagination in a 14 year old who picked up his brother-in-laws copy of The dying Earth and still, at 43 hasn't returned it. That copy now has lots of friends in a 2000 book library thats survuved two moves of country a marriage a divorce and 4 house moves. My favourite author? still the best Jack Vance.

Saddened to hear of the passing of Jack Vance. Many years ago someone donated a box of books. The Eyes Of The Overworld was among them. 30 odd years later I am still enjoying his unique imagination and story telling. He was the Shakespeare of science fiction. May god send his soul into the lands of his imagination.

I will always miss him. I used to look forward to his new books like it was Christmas Day. But at least I can re-read the old stuff - there is certainly enough to keep me occupied....

I had never read any Science Fiction until my boyfriend introduced me to it through "The eyes of the overworld" in 1969! We have been married for 42 years now, and Jack Vance remains the favourite author ever, for both of us. My personal favourite is the Lyonesse series. I read and re-read it constantly, followed by the demon kings, the dying eath series, and ....everything really. We have copies of all he has written. Vance has created a universe in time and space rivalled only by Tolkien. When you read his autobiography you see that he got his ideas from his wide travels and unique experiences. Amazing detail, wonderful imagination, powerful language, massive sense of humour and a great deal of philosophy. His descriptions of food on various remote planets is hilarious. Those that try to follow only fail. (George R. R. Martin, Terry Pratchett, etc.)

Have only just discovered that Jack had died. I was introduced to his books in around 1970 when a friend recommended the Dragonmasters. I didn't enjoy it that much, but once I read City of the Chasch I was hooked. He is, and will remain (I think) my favourite author ever. The Lyonnesse Trilogy is my favourite series of books, and funnily enough, only today,I'd been thinking of rereading it for probably the 5th time (at least). In my eyes he was the master of fantasy fiction. There are other good writers out there, but no one has seemed to replicate his great story lines, but in particular the humour he introduced. As an example I just love the bit where he insists on going into the bank through the front door in The Killing Machine (I think), and because of the staff attitude, buys the bank. Love it! My wife has just mentioned the Cugel books, Dying earth etc. I loved the Star King Books, Planet of Adventure, who can forget the Dirdir being hunted by our hero for purple sequins. I think I know what I'm reading for the next few weeks. RIP Jack. Drinking a toast to you with my wife. You were great, you were the BEST.

Riding my bike age 10 or so I found a pile of Sci-Fi books by somebody's house at the curb. There were some great tales like Heinlein's "Green Hills of Earth" but fortunately one was "The Dying Earth" & I became a life-long fan. I have re-read my collection so many times they have become part of me. Thank You Jack! You will be missed but save a spot for me & I'll play bass

Jack Vance did it all... with style! Of all her centennial paramours, nobody cherished English like he, Jack Vance. His imagination and wanderlust, style and scathing wit, attention to detail and love of colour, we might never see again; he was truly one-of-a-kind. Jack, your books have been part of my life for decades. Whenever I need a bit of comfort reading, I pick up the Star King once more, as I did decades ago, and relive the adventures of Kirth Gersen for the umpteenth time! And the good news is that I will continue to do so even now you are gone.

I never realised that Jack had left us. As others have said, he left the world a richer place than he found it. I'm still amazed that anyone could write in such bright colours. A Jack Vance book is just on a whole new level. Many thanks.

Every year I would reread and enjoy his works... now, while rereading "the blue world" I must discover that this unique voice will not speak any more. Sitting here in office with tears in my eyes, I've only just realized that my favourite writer of all time has passed. It's a true shock, the loss of the master of the densest, most imaginative prose in English language in the 20th century. All I can say is thank you for many of the most wonderful hours in this life of mine. To Live Forever? Certainly, in the 50 volumes of the works of Jack Vance, waiting on my bookshelves to inspire and console me again and again.
