Jack Vance passed away at home on the evening of Sunday May 26, 2013, ending a long, rich and productive life. Recognized most widely as an author, family and friends also knew a generous, large-hearted, rugged, genial, hard-working, optimistic and unpretentious individual whose curiosity, sense of wonder and sheer love of life were an inspiration in themselves. Author, friend, father and grandfather – there will never be another like Jack Vance.

~ ☆ Raise a Toast to Jack Vance ☆ ~

At the last moments of the universe, with eternal darkness converging from all sides, surely someone will arise and cry out: ‘Hold back the end for a final moment, while I pay tribute to the gallant brewmasters who have provided us a pathway of golden glory down the fading corridors of time!’ And then, is it not possible that a bright gap will appear in the dark, through which the brewmasters are allowed to proceed, to build a finer universe?

Jack Vance is the reason I began reading science fiction. Somehow always thought I'd get the chance to thank him in person. RIP, you brilliant man.

I recently cleared out my collection of sci-fi novels - I gave away dozens and dozens of books. But not my Jack Vances; they are too dear to me. Thanks for filling my youth with wonder, thanks for the colors, the sights and the magic. Rest in peace.

You wrote beautifully; nobody else used English with such deft flair. Your unending reservoir of new worlds that were both wonderful and satisfying was not of this world. Thank you so much.

I found the works of Jack Vance through my love of Dungeons & Dragons. In the back of the Moldvay Basic Rules book, on page B62, there was a bibliography of "Inspirational Source Material." Jack Vance was one of many that caught my eye. The stories were wild, wondrous, and witty. Far from the typical sword-and-sorcery fare I was used to. They made me think. They made me re-read to see if I had missed anything. I miss Vance already. I would thank him for the magic and the wonder of reading about a world so out of reach, yet so tantalizingly near. Full of sheer myth and legend. Echoing with enchantment and the booming presence of so many larger-than-life characters. Shimmering with charm and color even as the star giving it life gutters and dies. I wish him well on his next journey.

One of the greatest moments of my life was when I met Jack in 1992 at the Orlando Grand Master WorldCom convention. He signed my copy of "Son of The tree". I'll continue to reread all of his books forever.

You brought something to the realm of science fiction and fantasy writing that few other authors could or did. Your writing never lost a sense of fun and adventure, nor has anyone equaled your knack for descriptive prose. You will be sorely missed.

Although I had read "Vandals of the Void" as a teenager, my involvement with Jack Vance's work really began in graduate school when I read "The Dying Earth" for the first time and became an instant fan. I believe I've read at least one version of all of his published work and just recently discovered jackvance.com and therefore his biography, "Songs of the Dying Earth," and the charming and witty chamber opera based on, "Space Opera" itself. I am shocked and saddened to hear of his death, but I have his books and that is some consolation. For some reason, I keep thinking of Zab Zonk from "Araminta Station" as I write this. Perhaps it's time for bit of uiskebaugh in his memory.

The world was transformed into a much more vibrant sphere for your presence. "What exists is real; therefore it is tragic, since whatever lives must die. Only fantasy, the vapors rising from sheer nonsense, can now excite my laughter." - Lord Pirmence of Castle Lutez

I found Star King in a huge foreign bookstore in Tehran, where there was no system of filing or cataloging, in 1973 or 1974 - however, as an American expatriate, it was a major discovery. I didn't know the book or the author, but it was the beginning of a 40 year adventure and I think I've read all of his SF/Fantasy many times.

Having cut my SF teeth on the likes of Clarke and Asimov (estimable in their own way but no great prose stylists) coming to Jack Vance was like getting a colour TV after years of black and white... A wonderful writer, and an incomparable crafter of arresting images, arcane dialogue and baroque landscapes. Rest in Peace.

Joe Bergeron

Jack was my favorite writer. His books and stories were like fabulous, unusually lucid dreams, full of the clever dialogue you'd want to remember when you woke up so you could scribble it down. He was the only writer I ever went out of my way to visit, and he and Norma were most hospitable to me. I haven't seen him in 20 years, and I regret that. I will treasure my collection of Vance books and reread them when I need a special treat. Farewell Jack Vance.

Jack Vance could paint a picture in one sentence that was more vivid that others could do in an entire book. The world has lost an amazing writer.

Jack Vance first caught my attention in the early 1970s. At first I was put off by the typical lurid covers, but once I was two paragraphs into STAR KING, I was hooked for life, and enjoyed reading and re-reading his wonderful works for many, many years. I cherish the two autographed copies of books that I actually waited in line at a couple of his rare appearances in bookstores to ask him for. What a wonderful writer, and all around bonhomme. He will be missed, and we will remember him fondly.

Jack is my favourite author of all time. At one time in the distant past, when I needed a nickname, I tried out different ones for size. One stuck. Rhialto. I hoped that the name would convey to me some of his magical properties and appeal to romantic partners. Maybe it helped, but the name stuck anyway...

The entire collection of Jack Vance science fiction and fantasy resides on my shelves...something I haven't bothered to do with any other author. And some of those books have been read many times. All will be read again. In my view, Vance was the best.

He bent, touched the soil of Tchai, crumbled a handful pf mold between his fingers. Then he too entered the unlovely hulk. The port was closed and sealed. The generators hummed. The ship lifted toward the sky. The face of Tchai receded; the Planet exhibited rotundity, became a grey brown ball, and presently was gone.

Jack, you were an amazing, visionary, startlingly gifted writer. I'm very glad you told me your stories. I don't think the writers of this piece -- published today -- knew of his death. This is an astonishing accidental tribute though: "In plain words: forced overconsumption of cultural trash is what most westerners grew up in. They grew up in the eternal present of late capitalism, with no one encouraging them to envision any kind of future. This cultural disability can be cured by cultivating a renovated desire of future worlds. Let's brush the dust off those old Robert A Heinlein books. Let's take back our Cordwainer Smiths, our Jack Vances, our Philip J Farmers, and our Ursula K Le Guins. Let's reconquer utopia." http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2013/may/29/wu-ming-top-10-utopias

The origin of so much of what I grew up with was attributable to the genius of Jack Vance. Much of what I read today is pale imitation of his original work. Truly, a pioneer and a sad day.
