I was 10 when my father lent me a book from his sci-fi collection. It was the first science-fiction book I read, the title was "Cugel l'Astucieux" and the author was Jack Vance. And since this time, I know some places where traveling is wonderful. Bon vent John, et merci !

I still vividly remember the day I first picked up one of Jack Vance's works. A dreary day in the fall of 1998. All I remember from that day is that by the time I put down the book next days dawn was creeping through the curtains. From then on I was captivated by his storytelling and world building. it is sad to hear that a man with such a gift has passed away, the world will be poorer for it. May he rest in the light and have peace in whatever follows after. I hope they apreciate a good storyteller where ever he is now. My condolances and sympathy to those he left behind

It's very sad to hear this news. There has never been another author who I've have enjoyed reading so much. Whose wit and intelligence has made me grin so much and whose imagination and decriptions have instilled such a sense of wonder in me. Here's to you Jack Vance and thank you for a lifetime of dreams and imagination. I grew up from a very young age reading your books. It started with reading Languages of Pao and the demon princes in Dutch and finding out that after the first book in the cadwal chronicles trilogy it would take a very long while for a sequel! I eventually grew up to own an amazon.com account by myself, ordered books from the US which I still have (in sorry state but still there) and was crushed when during my student years I had to decide between food and the hardcover integral edition. Of course I chose food in the end but had to suffer for years until sfgateway.com and gollancz in the UK decided to rerelease the entire integral edition as ebooks so I could finally reconnect on my kindle paperwhite. It's been a pleasure to slowly reread every book (working my way through all the books that I never got a chance to read) and especially to read all 3 books in the cadwal chronicles! I look forward to owning all your books in electronic format and to rereading them once every few years as I have done with planet of adventure, the alastor cycle, the demon princes, the dying earth and so on! Thank you for sharing your imagination through the medium of books, for enriching my life and for a lifetime of reading!

Jack Vance is immortal. In his books, Jack Vance shall live for centuries, supporting with his indomitable spirit those noble non-conformists who seek justice in this world. Over the years, I've translated into Russian 20 of his books, and every one gave me an incomparable pleasure. Long live Jack Vance!

Reading the sad news and your wonderful comments I am just crying like a baby... He was the greatest and he will live forever in his books. The only author that I have continuously re-read all my life and the only one whose work I keep in my heart as part of my soul. Sometimes I think all his fantastic universes did really exist in his mind and that he was able to tell us, lucky people, how they were... Buon viaggio Jack e vento in poppa!

The emperor went out among his subjects to see how they fared, and the author mingled with his fans to hear their thoughts. The depth of his writing was not always obvious. It started out as a good read, and then it kept improving as one thought more about it and re-read it.

I have grown old with Jack Vance and immeasurably enriched by the reading: humor with intelligence, great characters, intricate worlds of wonder unfolded before my eyes. Deeply saddened by the passing of a meteor in the darkness. Go with my greatest of thanks old friend.

I discovered Jack Vance through a fever for early SF writers. I must admit i hated fantasy or adventure books at that moment and Jack Vance just turned my mind with his amazing books. What a great memory, reading the dying earth cycle while listen to iron maiden ! beyond his death, it is also the end of a great generation of authors that just left ashamed so many today's "SF" writers. a french fan.

I've read Jack Vance since I was fifteen, hooked forever by a short passage in The Dying Earth that mentions a tiny pink light bobbing in a distant, dark forest. No other explanation, everything left to my imagination. I've never stopped reading and rereading him since (I'm now 43). RIP to another master.
