Jack Vance passed away at home on the evening of Sunday May 26, 2013, ending a long, rich and productive life. Recognized most widely as an author, family and friends also knew a generous, large-hearted, rugged, genial, hard-working, optimistic and unpretentious individual whose curiosity, sense of wonder and sheer love of life were an inspiration in themselves. Author, friend, father and grandfather – there will never be another like Jack Vance.

~ ☆ Raise a Toast to Jack Vance ☆ ~

At the last moments of the universe, with eternal darkness converging from all sides, surely someone will arise and cry out: ‘Hold back the end for a final moment, while I pay tribute to the gallant brewmasters who have provided us a pathway of golden glory down the fading corridors of time!’ And then, is it not possible that a bright gap will appear in the dark, through which the brewmasters are allowed to proceed, to build a finer universe?

Jack Vance was amazing. I've read and re-read his writings over the years, and I still greatly enjoy derivations of his work in the role-playing game industry, as do millions of other people. Jack's particular flavor of fantasy spell casting was the basis for the one used in the original Dungeons & Dragons, and he will be greatly missed!

It is no secret for my old friends that I have been a big fan of Jack Vance since I was a teen, some 30 years ago. I respect his ability to build totally alien yet believable societies and peoples. I thank hi, for decades of fun and thrills that only a great author can provide - from the Demon Princes universe to the Dying Earth, I've threaded his worlds and enjoyed every last one of them. Farewell Jack!

The Dragon Masters, The Last Castle. Read them in my formative years, high school in the early 60's. Clever, inventive, inspiring. He was a big reason I fell in love with science fiction. I would like to thank him for his many gifts to us and I raise my glass to you, Jack Vance, and wish you safe travels!

A toast for one of the great masters of fantasy. I always fondly remember not only the words but the feelings he inspired to me in his Lyonnesse books. May he have peace and happiness in whatever world he now inhabits.

I first bought and read Jack Vance in 1985 (The Dying Earth) and only last month finished his works (with The Fox Valley Murders). It took a long time only because his mystery novels were not easy available. In between I reread all his books several times. In fact there's no writer I spent so much time with. I'm sad we lost him, but happy I can always go back to his books. R.I.P. Mr Vance

Very sad to read this news. Jack Vance has been my favourite author since my early teens and I've never found another to match his style and clever use of language. Reading his books gave me much pleasure and I now plan to read them all again and will think of him while doing so. Thank you.

What he wrote was a constant challenge for the imagination, the mind, for every senses. But what he didn't write, what remains unsaid between his lines, there lie the master's greatest lessons. Humour of the most subtle kind, of course ; but also unmatched depths of poetry, weirdness and tragedy. Thanks for the magic.

Too airy for some and far too atramentous for others, the invocation of your name was a shibboleth for identifying fellow savants predisposed to a particular sensibility. Yet while you have concluded, the visible spectrum of your refulgent sapience continues its languid outward peregrination, traversing the void to illumine we scrabbling creatures who remain on this, your dying Earth. Cheers, good sir, and thank you!

Here starts the dying of the Earth. To me Jack Vance was one of the truely great ones of fantasy, right next to Fritz Leiber or J.R.R. Tolkien. I've enjoyed everything I've read from him and will continue to do so the rest of my life. To his family and friends: I'm sorry for your loss, may you find support in knowing that his books will live forever, spreading joy to so many people.

The news saddens me...he was definitely my favorite fantasy writer. He had a long and full life and created so many through his shear imagination. To Jack and all the worlds, and stories therein, he has left us to marvel at and get immersed in!

During my highschool times when my mind was very busy with lots of things and socalled literature, I freed myself reading real books.. freud, kafka, joyce, and LOTS of sci-fi on the side. My english (not native speaking) drastically improved. Ahh.. the adventures of Cugel.. fond memories, and thankful.

I wish I could thank Jack Vance for all the great stories he's written. I started reading him in 1967 and, though I've read many other authors in all genres, Jack is still my favorite. His works are the pride of my bookshelf. I'm very sad he is gone and will write no more, but I'm grateful he left us a treasure trove of great literature.

Don't remember when I read my first Jack Vance book, but I later learned I had seen his work while watching Captain Video in my elementary school years. My bookshelf now contains everything written by him under the name Jack Vance. Am half way through yet another re-read of Araminta Station. He's the man!

A great teacher never leaves, as his lessons always are keep in those who taught. Jack Vance was a great master of the genre, his influence spreads beyond literature and reaches other media as pen and paper RPGs, and like a great teacher his works made him atemporal. Thank you very much Master Vance.

I am at a loss for words here. Although I knew this day had to come sometime, it still grieves me to know that Jack is no longer with us. He has been a huge part of my life and his books have provided me with untold hours of pleasure. I have read and reread them all many times. I have always wished that I could live in one of the worlds he created. He may be gone, but the universe he created will live forever!

I've been reading Jack ever since I discovered his astoundingly versatile narrative powers, I think it was around 1956 or so. In fact it was mainly (if not only) his work that brought me to found a SF & F series in the Netherlands. Amongst all kinds of stuff we published quite a bit of his titles as Dutch translations. Well, you see, I wanted to share the joy his tales brought me with other Dutch people, and to do this with the public at large I longed to translate his wonderful books and stories myself - and so I needed a vehicle to publish them. The series still exists, although under its umptieth name, this world being what it is. Today my involvement in publishing, and my wife's, is focussed on the Discworld stories of Terry Pratchett, who as many have discovered shares a certain Wodehouse-like sense of humour with Jack. Our bedroom wall is covered with a vast load of SF & F books, which gives me an eternal sense of being in the presence of Jack. And of course of his wife, as her voice still echoes over Amsterdam from when the two of them walked around there and she, on the top of her voice, kept on drawing his attention to all the weird and bizarre things that Vance-like city had to show. Now let's keep him alive! And whenever someone accuses you of patronizing them or worse, just quote Jack (as I did just the other day): 'No, no, I detest no one! Not even you!'

About 40 years ago, i bought my first SF book. It was Tschai. And i immediatlely fell in love with it. That book alone has been responsible for a lifelong love for SF and Fantasy. Thank you Jack Vance and farewell.
