Jack Vance passed away at home on the evening of Sunday May 26, 2013, ending a long, rich and productive life. Recognized most widely as an author, family and friends also knew a generous, large-hearted, rugged, genial, hard-working, optimistic and unpretentious individual whose curiosity, sense of wonder and sheer love of life were an inspiration in themselves. Author, friend, father and grandfather – there will never be another like Jack Vance.

~ ☆ Raise a Toast to Jack Vance ☆ ~

At the last moments of the universe, with eternal darkness converging from all sides, surely someone will arise and cry out: ‘Hold back the end for a final moment, while I pay tribute to the gallant brewmasters who have provided us a pathway of golden glory down the fading corridors of time!’ And then, is it not possible that a bright gap will appear in the dark, through which the brewmasters are allowed to proceed, to build a finer universe?

Many hours i've spend on Tschaï and other worlds you've created. Thank you for the insights in your imagination and the many pleasurable hours i've had reading. Let's hope you've arrived on a planet of adventure by now and having the greatest adventure of all.

The "Alastor" omnibus was one of the two SF books that I have bought on my own for the very first time. I re-read it countless times and it was my favourite pick for rainy Sundays, bringing back the color and warming my heart with joy and adventure. Jack is gone but his books will live on.

Night: The day is retreating, night falls, stars appear. I am not happy because you are not here. Gentle moonlight caresses softly my sleeping face. I am leaving, to the stars into my dreams, vanishing without a trace... R.C.P. Croese. Bon Voyage on your final sailtrip!

Jack Vance, mort ?

I always knew I wanted to pay my respects to Mr.Vance. Ironically I did it a week before his death through his family website. I first read nopalgarth, 30 odd years ago. My first reaction was, "This is weird". I can still say that about his works. But adjectives amazing, pyrotechnical, otherworldly and inspired would have to join the list. All his books had a strange effect on me. As bizarre as it sounds, when I read any of his science fiction books, I felt like the universe, society and all the chaos fell neatly into place and I was able to understand for a brief second, the world I’d lived in for so long. He understood the human psyche and made it dance to his tune. For me the general mess of life faded back a few feet and I felt like I had clearer sight. I had always seen him as an etnologist if fate hadn’t made him a writer. I will miss him and the completely unique way of thinking he represented. I raise a toast him. “Once there lived the hero Emphyrio, who spoke such truth that monsters listened”.

I was first drawn to Mr. Vance's work in the 50's, when I saw the cover art on the first paperback edition of "The Dying Earth". Then I looked inside, and was hooked for life. He will be sorely missed.

My father handed me a Jack Vance novel when I was a kid, the first in the Demon Princes series. Instantly my world changed, expanded, brightened. Later, as an adult, I had the honour of working on the Vance Integral Edition, and was finally able to read some of his older works. Again revelation, as new facets of Jack's remarkable story telling were revealed. Now one of the greatest joys in my life is finding an uninitiate to introduce to Jack Vance. Thanks Jack, my best wishes go with you, and all your family.

I only recently found and read Tales of the Dying Earth and I could instantly see the influence that these stories had on things I had grew up with my entire life. Not only that they were amazing stories that held up despite being written in 1955! I have books written in 1991 which are already dated and silly. Sleep well Mr. Vance and thank you. You deserve to have your works in the Museum of Man.

Jack Vance is my favorite author -- notwithstanding that I'm not, generally, a fan of sci- or fantasy writing. His sheer brilliance and divine uniqueness could not be denied -- weirdly, one felt like they knew him, while simultaneously feeling speechless awe at his untouchable genius. I couldn't bear watch interviews of him, not wanting to risk breaking the spell whereby he was almost not mortal. A sad day.

I worked many, many hours on the VIE project, out of sheer love and admiration for Jack's writing. No other author has provoked me to read, and re-read so many books. He had wonderful, unmatched talent with "laconic eloquence". I will continue to read, and re-read. With tears in my eyes. Mark Adams.

Today to my great sadnes, I heard Jack Vance has died. My sincerest condolances to his family for such a loss. His stories, first encountered in my formative years, were of great influence to who I am, what I am today. They have been with me for over forty years, read, reread and reread once again. Today I found myself crying in front of my computer. This has never happened before. Humanity has lost one of its great sons.

I discovered Jack Vance's work 50 years ago. No writer has ever so consistently held my attention in story after story, novel after novel. I had the pleasure of meeting him in the late 1970s and was astounded at his patience in signing the 30 or 40 books and magazines I had had the temerity to bring to the meeting. When I expressed my gratitude - and surprise - he replied, "You've got about 20 years of my stuff here. I can give you 20 minutes." I actually got much more than the 20 minutes I deserved - we were both ex-merchant seamen and his sea stories were MUCH better than mine. Over the years I collected and kept everything he ever wrote. When I moved to his home town, Oakland, CA, I ended up managing a local bookstore which I make sure is stocked with every Vance book in print. He lived only 20 minutes away but I never got up the nerve to visit him again. His young grandson came into the bookstore once and upon seeing the dozen or so Vance books on the shelf, gravely observed, "My grandpa has more Jack Vance books on his shelf than you do." I have so many memories of exactly where I was as I encountered a new Jack Vance work. His creations are a part of my life. He is, perhaps, the only science fiction writer whose work I can safely say will still be admired and read a century and more from now. I miss him already.

I have a shelf of soft-cover pulp by Jack Vance. In my sci-fi days of yore, I went through a lot of authors and settled on Jack Vance. He just connected with me. I read everything I could get my hands on, and that was not easy at the time. I'll toast to a well-spent life, one that made a difference in mine. Jim Barry

I don't really have the words for a time like this. I have read and reread Jack Vance virtually my whole life. My first Vance book was The Star King. I read it when I was 16 years old. Now, at 55, I have every Jack Vance book and only re-read the Demon Princes for the millionth time last month Your a legend Jack. Thanks for all the words and all the worlds

Jack Vance's writing is something I have shared with my father and now with my son, with my husband, and with friends. This web of appreciation continues to expand as far-flung members introduce his work to their friends and family. He was a unique wit. He will be missed. But I am grateful for all the books he left for us mere mortals to engage in.

I read back Tschaï two month ago, for the fifth times, with same pleasure than I was 15. Jack Vance had a skill to describe amazing worlds and complex civilizations, he was able to give life to incredible characters (good or bad). In my opinion, "To live forever" was his best book, and today i'm disapointed because Jack was worthy of being an amaranth. Thanks a lot Mr Vance, Rest In peace.
