Job Description

About the Company:
Join a privately held, independent building materials distributor that has been serving the Northeast for over a century. The company supplies high quality lumber and specialty building products to independent retail yards, one step distributors, and big box dealers across New England, New York, New Jersey, and Eastern Pennsylvania. With a strong focus on dependable delivery and long term relationships, the organization is known for anticipating tomorrow's market demands and supporting its customers' growth.

Role You Will Play:
As a Territory Manager, you will own a sales territory covering Central/Western New York and Northern Pennsylvania, with a home base in the Rochester or Syracuse, NY area. You will be responsible for driving profitable growth with existing accounts and targeted new customers, representing a broad portfolio of mid to high end building products. Reporting to senior sales leadership, you will be the face of the company in the field and a key connector between customers, vendors, and internal teams.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and execute a territory sales plan for Central/Western NY and Northern PA, focusing on revenue growth and margin improvement.
  • Manage and grow relationships with retail/dealer customers and one step distributors (e.g., ABC, Lansing, Kamco and similar accounts).
  • Promote and sell a portfolio including decking, porch flooring, railings and lighting, siding, fasteners, and tools, positioning premium products to fit customer needs.
  • Conduct regular in person visits, line reviews, and product training with customer stakeholders ranging from yard workers to executives.
  • Use WoodPro (and related systems) to manage quotes, orders, pricing, and territory performance tracking.
  • Collaborate closely with inside sales, operations, and leadership to ensure reliable service levels and on time delivery performance.
  • Monitor competitor activity in the territory and provide feedback on market trends, pricing pressures, and product opportunities.
  • Represent the company at industry events, trade shows, and customer functions within the region as needed.
Ideal candidate profile:
  • 5+ years of successful outside sales experience in the building materials or closely related industry.
  • Strong product knowledge in decking, porch flooring, railing/lighting systems, siding, fasteners, and tools.
  • Proven track record selling to retail/dealers and one step distributors, ideally within the Northeast.
  • Resides in or willing to live in the Rochester or Syracuse, NY area, with regular travel across Central/Western NY and Northern PA.
  • Clear, concise communicator who is confident, intelligent, and "old school" in professionalism and relationship building.
  • Comfortable speaking with all levels of an organization, from yard staff to C suite decision makers, with a grassroots, hands on style.
  • Consistent work history that demonstrates commitment and stability rather than frequent job changes.
Benefits and Role Features:
  • Opportunity to manage an established territory with significant existing customer relationships and room for growth.
  • Work for a stable, long tenured company with over 100 years of industry experience and a strong reputation in the Northeast market.
  • Direct access to leadership and a lean organizational structure that allows for quick decisions and minimal bureaucracy.
  • Competitive compensation package that combines base pay with performance based incentive opportunities (commission/bonus structure to be discussed during interviews).
  • Supportive internal sales and operations team focused on service, reliability, and long term customer partnerships.
Community Highlights:
  • Live and work in the greater Rochester/Syracuse corridor, offering a balance of vibrant mid sized cities and accessible suburban and rural communities.
  • Access to outdoor recreation across Central and Western New York, including lakes, parks, and year round activities that align well with an on the road sales lifestyle.
  • Strong regional building and remodeling market, providing ongoing opportunity with established independent lumberyards and distributors.
