Environmental Science Lab Manager Stanford University, Stanford, CA. This position is a fixed-term, one-year appointment with potential renewal. Note: The role is exempt from the hiring pause as deemed critical by the Dean’s Office. About Us The Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability is dedicated to creating a future in which humans and nature thrive in concert. Its mission is pursued through academic departments, institutes, and the Sustainability Accelerator, which together advance research, education, and policy solutions that support global sustainability. Within the school, the Department of Earth System Science (ESS) seeks to understand, predict, and respond to human‑caused and natural environmental change. ESS supports a large graduate community, and the new role will help establish the Pellegrini lab and support research in fire ecology and biogeochemistry. Responsibilities Coordinate wet‑lab work, including procurement, equipment setup, pipeline design, and assistance with analytical procedures. Design and execute field and laboratory studies focused on climate change and fire ecology. Conduct campaign‑based fieldwork at sites such as Sequoia and Kings Canyon, Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve, and Kruger National Park. Analyze and interpret research data for modeling and presentation. Oversee equipment reliability and maintain safety protocols in lab and field settings. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience in relevant scientific fields, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience applying multidisciplinary scientific principles, experimental design, and laboratory coordination. Ability to analyze and interpret research data, including identifying irregularities and invalid results. Proficiency in organizing data and developing models for integration and display. Basic experience with scientific software applications and systems relevant to the position. Strong coordination skills with scientific staff and ability to assist with technical procedures. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Preferred Qualifications Background or degree in Earth System Science, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related fields. Prior experience as a lab manager for an environmental science lab involving both field and laboratory work. Physical Requirements Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, squatting, and grasping; lifting, carrying, and moving objects up to 50lb. Occasional sitting, kneeling, crawling, reaching above shoulder level, and work on hard surfaces for up to eight hours. Ability to work in dusty, dirty, or odorous environments. Correctable vision required. Working Conditions Extended or unusual work hours may be required depending on research and project demands. Work Standards Interpersonal skills for collaboration with Stanford colleagues and external partners. Pay Range: $38.55 to $46.68 per hour, contingent on qualifications, budget, and market comparisons.
