THIS IS A GRANT FUNDED POSITION

Definition : Under general supervision of the Assistant Chief Prosecutor, performs full-range of in-depth investigations, requiring a comprehensive knowledge of law enforcement tasks associated with investigation of criminal activity, and aid in the prosecution of cases in court. Position requires a high degree of independent judgment and a high degree of initiative and resourcefulness. This job class is treated as FLSA exempt.

Examples of Tasks

Tasks :
1. Basic job duties include case preparation, obtaining and reviewing law enforcement records, interviewing witnesses and crime victims, performing follow-up investigation (such as photography, crime scene visits, etc.), meeting with prosecutors to discuss open cases where further investigation is needed, meeting with expert witnesses, and drafting reports describing the details of an investigation.


2. Testifies in court regarding the facts of the case as known first-hand, evidence collected, notes, and actions taken. Appears in court to present evidence and sworn testimony on behalf of the SRPMIC.


3. May occasionally join the on-call prosecutor when called to the scene of a crime to provide assistance with advising officers and detectives on search and seizure, evidence gathering, witness interviews, and other topics as needed.


4. Performs other job-related tasks as assigned to maintain and enhance departmental operations.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics :
  • Knowledge of the history, culture, laws, rules, customs and traditions of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of the SRPMIC ordinances to be enforced.
  • Knowledge of state and federal statutes, codes and ordinances to be enforced.
  • Knowledge of police operations principles and practices including investigation, patrol, communications, records, community/public relations, and crime prevention.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with prosecutors, administrative staff, other law enforcement/regulatory agencies, departmental staff, Community officials, members of the Community, and the public.
  • Skill in analyzing and evaluating information accurately, and in expressing ideas clearly, when providing oral and written reports and recommendations.
  • Skill in maintaining confidentiality and using discretion in dealing with sensitive information.
  • Ability to adapt to changing work situations and assignments.
  • Ability to analyze data, draw logical conclusions, and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to properly handle emergencies and pressure without losing composure.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience : To qualify, a person must be a high school graduate or equivalent, and must have an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or a closely related field, and must have five (5) years specialized criminal investigations experience in law enforcement; a Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Criminal Justice, or closely related field is preferred.

Peace Officer Certification Requirement: The Criminal Investigator must be a sworn peace officer certified by the Arizona Peace Office and Training Board ("AZPOST") at the time of hire and must maintain AZPOST certification in good standing throughout employment.

Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.

Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member who closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License.
Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check. Employees are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
