Responsibilities Maintains real property records, including but not limited to survey mapping, title files, indexes, and coordinates by coordinating with regional staff on submittals, review, and cataloging of such records. Assists in clearing Attorney General title objections for priority projects in various regions where and when regional workload requires assistance. Assists various regions in preparing preliminary project/deed compilation maps and title research for use by Attorney General regarding land title litigation and land acquisition. Searches internal and public records for survey and title information for land acquisition projects and administrative surveys. Supervises and trains field crews in the operation of modern terrestrial, geodetic surveying, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) instruments, proper field survey procedures, and work‑zone safety. Plans and schedules work assignments for projects. Maintains and performs basic maintenance on survey equipment. Conducts reconnaissance and field surveys for administrative and land acquisition surveys. Prepares deed plots and reviews maps. Processes, balances, and transforms data derived from optical and GNSS observations. Assists in determination of boundaries through field survey measurements and research. Prepares survey maps in CADD. Performs property boundary surveys utilizing applicable survey principles and practices. Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non‑competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. Graduation from an Engineering Accreditation Commission, Engineering Technology Accreditation, or Commission Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology accredited bachelor’s or higher degree program in surveying or surveying technology; or Eligibility to sit for the Fundamentals of Surveying examination through the National Council for Examiners of Engineering and Surveying via a letter issued by the New York State Board for Engineering and Land Surveying (proof of eligibility required). Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Surveying Examination (FS) or successful completion of 52 weeks of service as a Land Surveyor Trainee and successful completion of the FS examination. Reassignment, reinstatement eligible, or transfer eligible applicants must meet the additional service criteria described in the posting. Individuals appointed as a Land Surveyor Trainee are required to complete a minimum of one year of successful performance as a Land Surveyor Trainee and pass the Fundamentals of Surveying Examination (FS). If you pass the FS by the end of the first year, you may be advanced to the Grade 20 Assistant Land Surveyor title; if you do not pass the FS by the end of the second year of the traineeship, you will be terminated from your position. Additional Comments: If appointment is at the Assistant Land Surveyor, SG‑20 level, the starting salary for this position is $81,193. This amount is comprised of the base salary of $74,193 with an additional geographic pay differential of $7,000, specific to this title and location. The job rate for this position is $101,121. This amount is comprised of the base salary of $94,121 with an additional geographic differential. Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain, work in remote areas, and endure adverse weather conditions. Travel, including overnight travel, may be required. Telecommuting may be available and will be discussed at interview.
